Children learn through their senses which is why it is important that we give them a sensory enriched environment to help them along the way. Take a look at some of our favorite sensory activities that you and your family are sure to enjoy.

Activity: Sensory Bottles! These cool sensory bottles are great to look at, promote a claiming effect and are also fun to shake. Grab a water bottle such as the ones pictured below (Voss water bottles) and think of some cool items to put in your sensory bottles (food coloring, glitter, beads, small balls, etc.) Just add water and a little bit of oil ( any type, baby oil, vegetable oil, etc.) and get to shaking those cool sensory bottles.

Glitter, beads, water and other small objects in cool "sensory" bottles.

Activity: Mixing primary colors! This activity is not only a great way to learn cause and effect by seeing what colors make what, but it provides a great amount of tactile input for children. This is also a family favorite because it’s a no-mess way to learn without worrying about the house getting dirty or cleaning the kids after playing with this activity.

Materials: Yellow, red, and blue paint; a medium or gallon size ziplock bag, and a  marker

Instructions: Squeeze two primary color paints into a ziplock bag and close the bag. Using the marker, write the two primary colors you placed into the bag and the color that is expected to come out. Allow your kid(s) to play around with the bag, mixing the paints together. Ask them questions about colors and you’re on your way to helping your kids learn.

What Can Occupational Therapist do for your Family?

When people hear me saying I am studying occupational therapy they always ask, “can you help me look for a job? Or they give a blank stare asking if I meant physical therapy?” Then I resort to giving my elevator speech.
